After an extensive assessment process, Green Commuter became a Certified B Corporation in January. B Corporations are companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. (B Corp certification is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or “USDA Organic” is to milk). As a benefit corporation, Green Commuter is required to 1) positively and materially impact society and the environment, 2) consider the impact of company decisions not only on shareholders, but also on employees, the community and the environment, and 3) annually issue a public benefit report that indicates social and environmental performance success against third party benchmarks.
We started the certification process back in August by answering a multipage questionnaire that evaluates our operations and policies through different screens (management, governance, environmental, etc.). With some interruptions in between, we finally completed the assessment phase in November and later had two interviews with the B Lab team where they examined specific documentation and practices such as purchasing, ownership and a whole lot more. The process was informative and inspiring – we gained some great tools along the way.
There are nearly 2,000 Certified B Corps around the globe – but we are the first US car sharing company to be certified by B Lab. We believe all-electric mobility using our model will alleviate traffic, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease the cost of commuting.
B Corp status is an important benchmark for us as it allows our community, stakeholders and clients to see and understand our business practices as well as our commitment to sustainability. It’s motivation for us and hopefully will encourage others to do the same.
